The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The NYMR is one of the best (some would say the best) preserved railways in the UK. This  popular steam railway runs regular journeys of 18 miles through the North York Moors National Park from Pickering to Grosmont with some seaside specials going all the way to Whitby.

The trains stop at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt, Goathland Station, Grosmont Station, and Whitby Station. Both Goathland, the home of the TV series Heartbeat and Grosmount stations are with easy reach of the Old Post Office.

A great family day out can be built around the railway. One of our favorites is to catch the seaside special at Goathland and travel to Whitby eating a picnic on the way. After a couple of hours at the coast we catch the return train after collecting fish and chips for the journey back to Goathland.

If you are feeling more energetic you can drive to Goathland, explore the village, then walk the route of an even older railway to Grosmont. At Grosmont you can explore the engine sheds before catching a train back to Goathland. Keep an eye on the timetable or you might end up walking back!

The Railway runs many activities and special events – The Santa Special is a great pre-Christmas treat for the kids.
